Preparing Offshore Platforms for Decommissioning
Decommissioning an offshore platform is a major milestone. Getting to that point requires extensive planning and forethought. Before a single well can be plugged or conductor casing removed, months (sometimes years) of preparation go into ensuring the structure is safe, accessible, and operationally ready for the next phase.
Beacon West Energy Group LLC specializes in engineering and construction management including the safe and efficient preparation of offshore platforms for decommissioning. This critical phase involves more than just logistics; it’s a coordinated engineering, procurement, and construction effort tailored to each platform’s condition and configuration.
Here’s a look at some of what’s involved:
Crane Repairs / Upgrades – Platform cranes often require refurbishment, upgrades, and in some cases, complete rebuild to safely support heavy lifts during well plugging & abandonment, equipment mobilization and removal.
Deck Plating and Handrail Replacements – Structural integrity is essential for safety. We assess and replace deteriorated deck plating, grating, handrails, and access points to ensure crew and Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement inspector safety.
Well Monitoring & Preparation – All wells are evaluated for integrity and accessibility. Pressure gauges are installed to monitor well pressures daily. Fugitive emissions are monitored monthly.
Marine Sanitation System Upgrades – Onboard water treatment and septic systems are updated to support crews during extended operations.
Fire Suppression System Enhancements – Existing fire systems are inspected, repaired, or replaced to meet modern safety standards.
Communications System Installation – Systems such as Gaitronics are installed to support emergency alarms, public address, and daily coordination.
Vessel Clean-Out and Equipment Removal – All tanks, vessels, and equipment not needed for P&A operations are cleaned and removed to clear space and reduce hazards.
Quarters Repairs / Replacement – When needed, living quarters are replaced or upgraded to safely house personnel during 24-hour P&A operations.
P&A Equipment Installation – Once the deck is cleared, specialized equipment required for plugging and abandonment is loaded onto the platform to commence this work.
Each project is unique, and so is our approach. Beacon West combines rigorous planning, cross-disciplinary engineering, HSE, procurement expertise, and field execution to deliver safe, compliant, and cost-effective readiness for decommissioning.
